Objective: SWBAT compose their own versions of Jamaica Kinkaid's "Girl," emulating the author's style and tone.
Do-Now: Think of yesterday's "Girl" poem. What expectations do you feel society has for your gender? What are you expected to do? What are you expected NOT to do? How are you expected to act?
Today: Compose your own version of Jamaica Kinkaid's "Girl" (titled either "Girl" or "Boy" depending on your gender.) In this poem, you should focus on what you feel society's expectations are for YOU. You should try to model your poem's style after Jamaica Kinkaid's. NOTE: You are not copying her ideas, you are creating your own. However, your poem will sound similar to Kinkaid's.
Homework: Finish your "Girl" or "Boy" poem.
