Objective: SWBAT characterize Baba based on his actions, dialogue, and narrator’s descriptions.

Do-Now: Describe your father.  What does he look like?  What is his personality like?  What does he do for a living?  What are some of his traits that set him apart from others?

Today: 1) Class will share out Do Now responses.  Teacher will review Chapter 1 and the beginning of Chapter #2.  What have we learned so far about the character Hassan?

2) Class will finish reading Chapter #2, continuing to characterize Hassan.

3) Students will begin to read Chapter #3, beginning to characterize Baba.  Class will discuss the character, Baba, and the effect he has on the narrator, Amir.

2) Class will read Chapter #1 and discuss the foreshadowing which occurs in the chapter.  What might be the event that changed the author’s life?

3) Students will follow along in their books as the class listens to Chapter #2.

2) Teacher and students will read a brief background on the author of “The Kite Runner” and discuss how the author’s life may influence his book.

Objective: SWBAT compose their own versions of Jamaica Kinkaid's "Girl," emulating the author's style and tone.

Do-Now: Think of yesterday's "Girl" poem.  What expectations do you feel society has for your gender?  What are you expected to do?  What are you expected NOT to do?  How are you expected to act?

Today: Compose your own version of Jamaica Kinkaid's "Girl" (titled either "Girl" or "Boy" depending on your gender.)  In this poem, you should focus on what you feel society's expectations are for YOU.  You should try to model your poem's style after Jamaica Kinkaid's.  NOTE:  You are not copying her ideas, you are creating your own.  However, your poem will sound similar to Kinkaid's.

Homework: Finish your "Girl" or "Boy" poem.

Do-Now: How did Annie change as a result of her illness?  How might this change affect her during the final chapter of the book?  What do you predict Annie might now do?

Today: 1) Class will review chapters 1-7, focusing on the changes Annie has gone through as she has aged.

2) Class will begin to read Chapter #8: A Walk to the Jetty.  What does Annie reflect on during her last day on the island?

3) Students will continue reading Chapter #8, focusing on how the story’s lose ends are being wrapped up in the final chapter.

4) Students will begin questions for Chapter #8.

Do-Now: Who takes care of you when you are sick?  Do you believe getting cared for by a friend/family members helps you recover more quickly?  What affect can being sick have on your life once you are better?

2) Class will begin to read chapter #7: “The Long Rain,” focusing on how Annie is taken care of during her illness.

3) Students will finish reading chapter #7, examining how Annie has changed due to her illness.

Today: 1) Class will share-out Do-Nows and discuss reasons why friends grow apart.  Class will review the relationship between Annie and Gwen.

2) Class will begin to read chapter #6: “Somewhere, Belgium,” focusing on how Annie and Gwen’s friendship is beginning to fall apart.

3) Students will finish reading chapter #6, examining how Annie and her mother’s relationship is deteriorating.

4) Students will begin review questions for chapter #6.

2) Class will begin reading "Gwen" from Annie John, examining on how Annie’s school life is used to replace the void she feels from losing her relationship with her mother.

3) Students will finish reading "Gwen," discussing the state of Annie’s relationship with her mother.
